Embossed artwork is now on display in the Administration Building of Moorpark College and will remain until March 1, before returning to Los Angeles artist Lauren Makai.
The collection is titled “Highway Mandalas: Intersections of LA,” and isbased on the overwhelming experience you get whenever you drive on the freeway, Makai said.
“Traffic is easy,” said Makai. “It’s a subject people can all relate to. We all have a traffic story.”
Makai said the traffic in West LA was an overwhelming experience driving on the freeway would then become the topic and inspiration for her art.
Inspired by the differences of subway transportation to that of commercial vehicles, Makai explained, “that this is a culture and community that we have created and adapted to.”
Makai believes that when driving there is a barrier between us and others that when riding a bus or subway there is a “general feeling of unity,” whereas driving alone excludes that.
Each Mandala is the convergence of one freeway to another. For example, one piece from the gallery is titled “Highway Mandala, 405 meets 605.” Other highways that can be found are the 10, 101, 110, 405, and 605, all roads that we know and have mostly likely taken. The word “Mandala” means peace and unity, which is what you can find when viewing any of the 17 pieces displayed.
“Most reactions to my works come from the people that see the highways they use,” said Makai.
“Makai’s art is relevant because so many people have traffic problems and can relate,” said Brittany Stone, 19, Moorpark student. “To make it worse I have to deal with Moorpark parking.”
While the process of creating such a collection might seem difficult, Makai felt otherwise.
“It was really a process of ideas, ideas of designs and what would look best,” said Makai. “And the process becomes apart of the artwork. White is simple, emphasizing the shadows that will help the piece pop.”
If interested in meeting the artist herself, Makai will be giving a lecture on Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. in Fountain Hall, Room 116.
