Perhaps an allusion to the monolith of “2001: A Space Odyssey,” giant blackboard cubes have appeared on the quad at Moorpark College.
As part of the Year of Democracy and the upcoming Constitution Day on Sept. 17, these “Speech Cubes” give students the ideal opportunity to voice their opinions and thoughts publicly and anonymously.
Some chose to write political messages, such as “Obama ’08.” Less seriously, others drew little (or big) pictures on the cube or scribbled references to anything from web-comics to Nintendo 64.
Some wrote quotations, bits of poetry, slogans, or proverbs. One student wrote in a broad hand, “Freedom only exists in the mind.”
A few students used profanity in their writing, testing their freedom to a near extreme.
All entries, no matter the content, celebrate our First Amendment right.
Every Monday, the cubes will be hosed off for a new wave of self-expression.
