The One Book, One Campus, One Community project is in full swing this semester at all three community colleges in Ventura County.
The goal of the project is reading the same material as a whole and gleaning the differing perspectives taken from the material to bring the campus community together, the Ventura College Web site states.
With a presidential election due this fall the readings are timely, and offer different titles for each campus in the district, said Diana Scrofano, coordinator of the program at Moorpark College.
The three titles offered are “Persepolis” by Marjane Satrapi for the Moorpark campus, “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson for Oxnard College, and “1984” by George Orwell at Ventura College.
“In Persepolis the author depicts her youth and experience of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution in 1979 when many citizens of her country were left without basic freedoms,” Scrofano said.
Oxnard College will have a campus discussion Nov. 12 on “Three Cups of Tea” led by Professor Marie Butler, Ph.D., as part of its speaker series.
The book deals with one man and his mission to promote peace by education, especially for girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
George Orwell’s novel “1984” is the featured selection for Ventura College.
The book deals with government and its use of language to control citizens, class conflicts and the struggle for individuality.
