The McNish Art Gallery at Oxnard College presented their first ever juried art exhibit on April 26 through May 9.
The exhibit featured artists from all levels of Studio Art classes with ages ranging from 16 to 60. It was quite a showing in the gallery at Oxnard, the event pulled in a good sized crowd and turned out some seriously inspired artwork.
“The school puts on the show six times a year. There’s a lot of good work and unique pieces,” says Gallery Director, Christine Morla, “including works by many students from various art disciplines including ceramics, design, drawing, and painting as well as mixed media work, installation, and interdisciplinary projects.”
Morla is heading up the two week event which gives her students a chance to have their work viewed by the public and be available for purchase. The exhibited works show the talents of students in introductory and intermediate courses as well as the skills of advanced art students. The original idea for prizes included $500 Presidential Scholarship Awards being presented to three students; Aaron Dadacay, for his painting “Machine 2: The Clown,” Gladys Rodriguez, for her Painting “Yo Soy” and Maureen Zeutzuis, for her sculpture “Blue White Vase.” Morla also informed the students at the award ceremony that an additional 10 students would be receiving awards as well, as more funds were made available.
The jurors are Fine Arts Professors Vince Flocco and Morla. First, second, and third prizes, as well as honorable mention were awarded on Wednesday. The McNish Art Gallery at Oxnard College welcomes public viewing two times a week and by appointment.
Gallery hours are Monday and Wednesday from noon to 5 p.m. A reception for the student artists was held on Wednesday, April 26, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. with an awards ceremony held at 5 p.m.
The show is free, open to the public and parking is $1. For more information contact Morla at (805) 986-5800, ext. 1929 or email [email protected].
