Ventura College’s Moises Barrera hit a three-pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining to keep the Pirates alive for an extra period with Oxnard College. However, the Pirates eventually lost to the Condors 85-82 in overtime in a game that went down to the wire.
After Barrera’s clutch shot, Condor guard Craig Lee hit a three-point shot to give his team a 79-76 lead just 37 seconds into the extra session. The Pirates’ Jordan Harris then responded with a jumper, scoring four of the Pirates’ 6 points in the overtime session.
The Condors (10-11, 3-3 WSC) sank three of their next four free throws before a Harris lay-up gave the Condors a two-point lead with two minutes to play, at 84-82.
With 3.4 seconds left in the game Barrera tried to recreate the late-game heroics he had in regulation by shooting another three but it fell short. The Pirates (5-14, 2-4) were forced to foul, and the Condors pulled away.
Lee led the Condors with 15 points on 3 three-pointers while Holmes had 12 and dished out four assists.
According to Head Coach Jason Cunningham the Condors were able to make a comeback in the second half by changing the team’s defensive strategy.
“The biggest thing was that we were playing man-on-man defense in the first half and it wasn’t working the way we wanted it too,” said Cunningham.
“In the second half we changed to zone and they weren’t able to penetrate as easily.”
With the win, the Condors will enter their bye weekend on a positive note and will return to their home court next Wednesday with a 7 p.m. tip-off against Allan Hancock College.
