A memorial event will be held in June for former Ventura College golf coach Brian Marshall, who died earlier last month after a short illness.
There are scheduled to be up to 200 people in attendance to celebrate Marshall’s life. In attendance will be his wife, who will also speak, as well as many more of Marshall’s close friends.
“He was a great human being,” said former Vice President of Student Services at Ventura College John Woolley. “He was very humble with a dry sense of humor.”
Marshall died at his home in Santa Rosa on April 9 surrounded by his family. He had been battling amyloidosis, a disease in which one or more organ systems in the body accumulate deposits of abnormal proteins known as amyloid. The memorial to celebrate his life will be at 2 p.m. on June 11 at Saticoy Country Club, where Marshall had been a member.
Marshall was hired at Ventura in 1972 to coach men’s basketball, which he did from 1972 to 1975. Then, in 1975 he was chosen to become the golf coach at Ventura College. Marshall coached the Pirates for 26 years. He also taught physical education at Ventura College. As a coach, Marshall turned the golf team into a true powerhouse. Marshall led the golf team to 10 Western State Conference titles. This was an incredible feat, as Marshall played golf in high school, but never taught the sport until he was asked to take over the Pirates team. Marshall retired from teaching in 2000 but kept coaching until 2002.
“Brian was a great asset, teacher and coach at Ventura,” said Woolley.
A plan is in the works to have a Brian Marshall golf tournament held at the same Saticoy Country Club, where all profits will go to the Ventura College golf team and to the Brian Marshall Golf Scholarship, which will be given to a member of the golf team at VC.
Marshall is survived by his wife Carol, son Jimmy, who also played golf for his father at Ventura College in the 80’s, and his daughter Kathy.
