It was a rubber match between potential Major League pitchers, as Oxnard and Ventura College’s aces faced off.
Oxnard’s Curtis Leavitt (3-3) pitched a complete shutout while allowing four hits and striking out 11 of Ventura’s players in the process and beating Ventura 4-0.
Ventura’s ace, Jake Renshaw (7-4), was looking to beat Oxnard for a third time this season. Even though he came out with a loss he was still able to strike out eight of Oxnard’s players.
Oxnard College’s coach, Jon Larsen seemed to be pleased with his pitchers performance.
“Our pitcher (Leavitt) pitched just a great game today,” said Larson.
Michael Minjares, who went 3 for 5 with two singles, a double, one run and one stolen base, led Oxnard’s offense.
Oxnard also received help from Spencer Kirksey, who was 2 for 4 with two doubles, one run and one RBI.
Tyler Diamond, who went 2 for 4 with a single and a home run in the ninth, also helped the cause.
Ventura remained scoreless with four hits and no earned runs.
“We just need to play harder,” said Junior Solis, who was 1 for 3 with a single. “We need to play together and we need to just play small ball.” what is small ball? You need a setup that explains that.
Oxnard’s first score came from Kirksey, who hit an RBI double that brought in Minjares.
On the next bat Arturo Garcia was able to hit a single while bringing in two runs.
Both Ventura and Oxnard College are in a race against Cuesta College for the top spot in the division.
Ventura has two games left where they will face off against Allan Hancock College and SantaNBarbara.
Oxnard also has two games left against Cuesta College and Moorpark College.
