In Moorpark’s second road game, the Raiders went into Santa Ana after their first loss of the year, to turn around and run through the Dons 17-10. The defense and special team units were crucial in the Raider win.
Westlake native Johnny Stuart, a freshman defensive lineman, was named defensive player of the week. He finished the game with five tackles, two sacks, and forced two fumbles.
Sophomore punter Kevin McLemore’s effort on special teams made the defense’s job easy by punting the Dons behind the 10 yard line multiple times. McLemore punted 8 times for 306 total yards. McLemore also made a fourth down conversion after running for a 1st down on a punt fake. Due to McLemore’s unorthodox style of punt, he caused a Don kick returner to drop the ball, giving Moorpark the possession.
Coach Will Thurston expressed his excitement following the players of the week announcements.
“It’s awesome that both guys received awards,” Thurston said. “We’re proud of them.”
The (2-1) Raiders are now ranked no.12 in Southern California in accordance with their win. Moorpark will host (1-2) Allan Hancock College on Saturday, Sep. 28, at Griffin stadium at 4 p.m.
