The Moorpark College baseball team dominated the visiting Oxnard College Condors 15-0 Saturday afternoon.
Coming into this fourth league game for both teams, Moorpark posted a record of 7-8 overall and 3-1 in league, while Oxnard came in struggling at 5-10 overall and 1-3 in conference.
Both teams looked evenly matched until Moorpark gave Oxnard an inning they would rather forget. Coming into the bottom of the second inning the game was tied 0-0. In the second inning Moorpark scored six runs, with the aid of two wild pitches and sloppy defense by Oxnard. The errors and wild pitches by Oxnard opened a door for Moorpark College to impose their will offensively.
Moorpark College freshman starting pitcher Brian Kernochan tossed six scoreless innings along with five strikeouts in Saturday’s game.
Oxnard could not find any answers for the performance by Kernochan, giving up only five hits to the struggling Condors.
“My defense had my back, I was just throwing strikes today,” said Kernochan. “Always trust your defense and you will be successful.”
Moorpark College Head Coach Mario Porto was also very excited about the victory, especially since his team came in without a few of their starters due to injuries.
“The original plan did not work ,” said Porto. “Our starting left fielder and third basemen didn’t play. We need to do what we did today.”
Aside from great pitching for Moorpark, the offense was also clicking on all cylinders. Moorpark batted through their lineup in multiple innings, and despite whatever new pitcher the Condors used they would not slow down. Moorpark ended up with 15 runs on 15 hits. With all of the offensive put out by Moorpark College, catcher Mario Landeros stood out going, 2 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored.
After the win Moorpark climbs to 8-8 overall and 4-1 in Western States Conference play, while Oxnard falls to 5-11 overall and 1-4 in conference.
Moorpark and Oxnard will match up again today.
