Thirteen Ventura College alumni were inducted into the VC Athletic Hall of Fame Saturday, Oct. 18, in the Third Annual Induction Ceremony at the Crown Plaza hotel in Ventura. Each inductee gave a mini speech to express their appreciation to those who supported their accomplishments during their years at Ventura College.
Charlie Dunn, earliest of the inductees, attended VC from 1949 to 1951, playing basketball as the starting point guard. He was drafted into the Army during his senior season. After the Army, Dunn went to UCSB where he received his bachelor’s degree and teaching credentials.
Duane Asplund attended VC from 1952 to 1954. He was a well-known athlete in both basketball and track, playing in all 35 games in basketball, where he finished with 608 points in 28 games for a 21.7 game average. He also ran on the track relay team and won the WSC high jump championship. He was honored as team captain.
He later transferred to UC Berkeley with a full athletic scholarship in basketball. James A. Whalen attended VC from 1954 to 1956, when he played basketball.
He transferred to UCSB for two years and was team captain for his basketball team. After his playing days Whalen became a well-known basketball coach and instructor for 30 years.
Lee Martin attended VC from 1957 to 1959, where he was the All-Western States conference selection each season for golf.
His credentials consist of 32 years as a head golf professional, 36 years as a Professional Golf Association (PGA) member and 44 years as a golf professional.
Others who were inducted into the Hall of Fame this year were: Isaiah “Bubba” Brown, 1966-1968, football; Robert Charles Fick, 1974-1976, baseball; George Hofmann, 1974-1994, contributor; Bruce Smith, 1976-??, basketball and track; Lester Neal, 1989-1991, basketball; Vanessa Hackett-Jacobs, 1990-1992, volleyball and basketball; Sonia Ortiz Ford, 1995-1997, softball; Amirah Leonard, 1996-1998, basketball; Joy Anna Barry, 1996-1998, soccer and football.
