Quidditch is a familiar part of the Harry Potter universe; it is the most popular sport in the wizarding world, but, until recently, Muggles have been unable to play the sport.
On Saturday, April 24, Moorpark College will host the Southwestern Cup, a Muggle Quidditch tournament, which will include Moorpark College, UCLA, Occidental College and Arizona State.
The club is thrilled with the positive feedback they’ve received.
“The school has been very supportive,” said Cambria Wells, secretary for the club. “We can’t thank them enough to help us do this.”
Events will include Quidditch matches, as teams play for the Southwestern Cup, live music from The Bogarts and performances form the Exotic Animal Training and Management program’s owls.
The Intercollegiate Quidditch Association, the official organization for college quidditch teams, has over 220 colleges worldwide, including the four teams competing in the Southwestern Cup.
“It’s more about the game and the event than it is [about] winning,” said Muggle Quidditch president and founder, Harrison Homel.
The AS utilized their Programming Fund to finance the event, which included the purchase of the official brooms used for Muggle
Quidditch.
“Once you have those brooms, we can play [official league] matches as a team,” said Wells.
The tournament will take place at the Moorpark College soccer field from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A note: It was previously reported that KROQ-FM radio hosts Kevin and Bean would be in attendance, this is untrue and we apologize for the mistake.
