The makers of Final Fantasy try their hand at making a Gears of War style shooter with a psychic twist with MINDJACK.
Square Enix showed off a demo of the game in their booth at E3, focusing on the online multiplayer aspect of the game.
The match started with the player floating around the battle field in a kind of ethereal state and from there “mind jacking” one of the playable characters. When you die you return to this state and must to find another vessel to inhabit.
This illustrates the psychic abilities you get to play around with. You also have the ability to “mind slave” an enemy after you lower their health enough, effectively giving you an AI teammate to watch your back.
Once you get past the mind control however, the game feels incredibly rough. The gun I fired felt wildly inaccurate, to the point where I was amazed I was able to hit anything at all.
The aiming controls also had a sluggish feel to them that made firing those useless bullets even harder.
There also felt like a five second delay between holding down the run button and actually running, which would get disastrously irritating in an intense fire fight.
Granted the game still looks to be early on in development, so if the developers can polish up the controls and expand on the psychic powers before the release, we all might want to jack into MINDJACK.
