Ventura College’s east campus will be hosting its second annual book drive on April 20 in the Learning Resource Center starting at 9 a.m.
The book drive will give all east campus students a chance to discover a new hobby, past time or a passion for reading they had never discovered.
“Our book drive is about promoting reading among our students,” said east campus representative Sierra Doehr.
“Students who haven’t discovered reading as a pastime can explore the different genres of books, and hopefully take home more than just a book, but a potentially new found love for reading,” stated Doehr.
Doehr also also stated that reading can be an enjoyable experience, even after reading all of the class assignments and reading required of for school.
“I want students to want to read,” said Doehr. “Reading can still be an enjoyable escape. I want to relight this love in some and inspire the rest. Hopefully, with the gift of a book, students will appreciate not just the physical gift, but the gift of reading found within the pages.”
This book drive has been created with the purpose to help out students who don’t have the ability to buy reading materials. The community, local bookstores and libraries, as well as the Student body itself can also contribute to this event by donating any type of reading materials to the East Campus. They also help by putting the word out to friends and family who can help with donations. The books collected then will be distributed and given to the east campus students.
East campus Coordinator Sabrina Canola started the book drive last year after being inspired in a used bookstore called “Bank of Books” in Ventura. The bookstore was giving away many books that people were able to take home. After this, Canola thought it would be a great idea for the east campus students to have the opportunity to obtain reading materials at no cost.
Any book donations will be collected until April 20. The east Ccampus will gladly accept any help and reading materials such as books, novels, old textbooks and binders anyone has to spare.
