Moorpark College’s Snow Day offered various opportunities for students to get involved; the only thing the event lacked was the snow.
Equipment malfunction deprived students of the winter activities promised on Jan. 19, but nevertheless the Moorpark College Associated Student directors were enthusiastic about promoting unity and interest in campus affairs.
“We wanted to find a fun way to get students involved, and to promote student organization,” said Tanya Pulley, who serves as the Associated Students director of public relations while she completes her second year as at Moorpark as a psychology and biology major.
Snow Day is the first of many events planned by the AS board of directors this semester. Pulley explains that activities such as Snow day are intended to encourage every student to become aware of issues regarding their college. By collectively becoming involved, students can have a say in decisions that shape their own college experience.
Walking across campus on the Jan. 19, no one could ignore the well-marked Ben & Jerry’s truck located at the center of the quad. If free ice cream was not enough of an appeal, the quad’s walkway was lined with an array of tables run by representatives promoting various student- run clubs and organizations. The Associated Student directors who organized the event personally handed out pamphlets revealing county-wide discounts for all Ventura County Community College District students.
Organizers replaced the snow activities with a marriage booth, the Associated Students ran a marriage booth, and encouraged anyone and everyone to grab a fellow student and get hitched.
“We just want to promote peace and love for everyone,” said Andrew Anzalone, the AS director of student organizations and Moorpark campus political science major. Anazalone explained that the booth was meant to draw the interest of passing students, but also served to represent student unity through participation.
Anzalone, Pulley, and several other AS directors served Subway sandwiches to newlyweds, as well as anyone else interested in the day’s events.
