The Moorpark College Women’s Basketball team encountered a dry spell against Cuesta College in a 47-49 season opening loss on Jan. 9.
The Raiders had attempted 57 field goals and only made 16 baskets. They also earned 19 free throws and only made 12 of them. Their offensive opportunities proved to be more difficult for the Raiders since they committed 24 turnovers in the game.
Raiders Coach Lindsay Goldblatt said that her team’s main problem was not being able to score on more of their opportunities that were given to them.
“I thought our defense was really good in the first half, we just had a tough time converting on some of our offensive advantages and some of our offensive opportunities and unfortunately we had a tough time scoring points,” said Goldblatt.
The Raiders played against the Cougars in their Western State Conference (WSC) opener. Both teams came into the game with a 12-7 record.
Athletic Director Howard Davis said that the team’s ball control cost them the game against the Cougars.
“It was a really disappointing loss because it was their worst game of the year, we played really sloppy and that’s disappointing because we should have won that game,” said Davis. “The turnovers were the main thing; we just threw the ball away so much it was just ridiculous.”
The Raiders played a closely contested matchup with the Cougars despite the lack of offense. Their defense kept them in the game by getting the Cougars to commit 25 turnovers and make 17 baskets out of 47 field goals. With 6.4 seconds left in the game, the Women’s basketball team had an opportunity to tie the score up at 49 points apiece with free throws, but Riley Abraham, Center, missed them both.
Leading the way for the Raiders was Abraham who led the Raiders with a Double-Double by scoring 16 points and 15 rebounds. Helping Abraham lead the offense was Camilla Chun, who added seven points, five rebounds, and two assists and Gabrielle Root who came off the bench to score nine points and three rebounds.
Guard Kylie Campos said that the team needs to focus on being more patient on offense.
“We didn’t have enough patience,” said Campos. “We are going to work harder at practice and be more disciplined.”
The Raiders are now 12-8 and will face off against Allan Hancock College on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. at Allan Hancock College.
