The Moorpark College Health Center offers low-cost cholesterol testing opportunities for the whole campus.
Moorpark’s Student Health Services Coordinator Sharon Manakas said testing cholesterol provides a good measure of your lifestyle.
“It is a good indication on how well or not well your body’s general nutrition is doing,” said Manakas. “It is a way to see if you need to make changes in your diet and exercise.”
The tests are scheduled for March 8 and April 19 from 8a.m. to 9:30a.m. in the Student Health Center. And they are open to Moorpark college students and staff at 10 dollars per person for a full chemical panel. Ventura College and Oxnard College Health Centers also have cholesterol testing available throughout the semester for students, but by appointment only.
The American Heart Association estimates that 99.9 million Americans are considered borderline-high or high risk for high cholesterol. The American Heart Association recommends that people get their cholesterol tested every five years once they reach the age of 20.
“If you have a family history of heart attack, stroke, or elevated cholesterol, especially at a young age,” said Wiley. “Then you should have your cholesterol checked.”
The cholesterol testing offered at Moorpark College happens only twice a semester and on a first come first serve basis. To sign up call the Moorpark College Health Center at 378-1413. To make an appointment at the VC Health Center call 654-6346, or at the OC Health Center call 986-5832.
