Students at all three campuses can still enroll in a variety of classes that begin this week, for March and April.
The late-start classes, offered in an effort to increase enrollment and accommodate busy student schedules, provide full credit for courses offered in a compressed 14-week, 12-week and 8-week format. These courses provide a second chance to students who may have missed the first enrollment deadline.
Ramiro Sanchez, executive vice president at Oxnard College, said that OC is currently involved in a marketing campaign directed towards approximately 2,000 students in Oxnard, Port Hueneme, and Camarillo.
“Over the years, OC has expanded the number of late start classes and approximately four years ago started a partnership with the Oxnard Union High School District whereby General Education courses are offered at each of the six high schools in a 14-week semester,” said Sanchez. “Another grouping of late start classes is from our PACE Program for working adults.”
In addition to promoting these classes, OC is adding two new speech classes and several new film classes, which will begin after the Spring ’06 semester. In classes like Introduction to Digital Film and Video Production students get hands-on experience in the operation of cameras, lenses, lighting equipment, microphones, audio recorders and switching, as well as set design and non-linear editing.
After Spring ’06, students at Moorpark College interested in DNA biology and the consequences of genetic engineering, will be able to enroll in Biology M10 and Biology M10 lab. These courses review basic biological concepts in order to build up to issues that are pertinent in today’s world, such as stem cell research, cloning, crop engineering, the human genome project, gene therapy, recombinant DNA technology and bioethics.
Ventura College will also be adding new courses in the areas of art, design, science, language and music. These include Introduction to Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art, where Ventura College students can survey painting, sculpture, crafts and architecture of selected Latin American countries. The course will give emphasis to Latin American identity through works of art that are culturally and socially expressive.
The late-start courses were approved by the College District Board of Trustees on Jan. 17 at a first reading, though many new classes still await their second reading.
Students interested in signing up for new or late start classes can find more information at Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura campus websites.
