A UCSB political science professor visited Ventura College on March 8 to talk about how globalization affects the United States.
Dr. Fernando Lopez-Alves spoke about globalization, Latin America and American foreign policy before a full Ventura College theatre Wednesday, March 8 at 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The free lecture was hosted by the Ventura College International Studies program.
Lopez-Alves said, “If things keep going the way they are going, the US will no longer be number one of the resources.”
Lopez-Alves also stated that there is room for growth, but the US, which is a world super-power, is neglecting Latin America.
“China wants to give Latin America a plan to connect Chili, Brazil, China, Argentina, Uruguay, Puerto Rico, Bolivia, and Ecuador by transportation ports,” said Lopez-Alves. “And India is seeking an agreement for the water sources.”
Lopez-Alves has his M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science at UCLA, along with a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Simon Bolivar, Venezuela. He is the author and co-author of many books including “Democracy in Latin America.” He has also served as a foreign correspondent for Latin American media networks, and as a consultant of Latin affairs for the American media.
“We all want our money,” said Lopez-Alves. “And everythinghas an extra cost.”
The lecture was presented in cooperation with the UCSB Venturacenter with co-sponsorship by the Global and International Studies and the Interdisciplinary Humanities programs. For more information contact Dr. Farzeen Nasri at 654-6400, ext. 1217.
