Oxnard College’s Women’s Day was a hit with students, faculty and staff, when guest speakers, jazz singers, and dancers gathered on campus. This year’s International Women’s Day was celebrated at Oxnard College, Wednesday, March 8, at 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
About 20 vendors sold jewelry, perfume, herbal medicine, and certainly would have had no idea that lectures were happening at the same time as “Monica’s Sword Dance,” and “Jan & Zami’s Middle Eastern Cane & Veil Dance.” Most students were sitting in classrooms during the hours that the speakers were taking their stand in the auditorium behind the OC Clock Tower.
“What a pity that we cannot attend all of the programs scheduled,” said Tina Sasaki, administrative assistant to Library Services Dean, Delois Flowers. Sasaki missed several speeches including “Menopause and the Modern Woman,” by OC Health Center Coordinator Mary Jones, and “Precious Flowers,” by Professor David Magalanes, a tribute to daughters of Hispanic origin, illustrated by his own experience as a father.
Jointly sponsored by the Psychology Club, Chemistry Club, OCNEMA and Re-entry Center, the event took place simultaneously in Room OE10-11 and the quad adjacent to the campus cafeteria. The event also included exhibitions, mounted by non-profit organizations, including Small Business for Women, as well as corporations like Avon.
For this particular occasion, the campus cafeteria was in full-swing. Special “Women’s Day” menus, offered at $3.50, were presented by students enrolled in the Culinary Arts Department. The menus included the following items: Burgundy Beef, Chicken Florentine, Alfredo Lasagna, White Rice, Roasted Garlic Potatoes, Steamed Broccoli, Parsley Coin Carrots, Cream of Broccoli Soup, and Chocolate Mousse Tarts.
This celebration of Women’s Day undoubtedly forced the classrooms within ear-shot to close their doors, which may have muffled the sound a bit, but certainly not the impact the event had on OC’s campus.
