Professor Jose Moreno will lecture on Chicano Studies, an interdisciplinary field that has a history of bringing the community and college closer together.
Students and faculty in all academic disciplines will benefit from the lecture which will be given Wednesday at noon in room LS8, the Clock Tower Auditorium at Oxnard College.
“Ventura County has a large Latino population,” said Moreno. “Whether you are in the medical field, education, the non-profit sector, or a corporation, you will benefit from Chicano Studies. It affects the community. “
Moreno will explore the history of Chicano Studies and the role it plays in the community, dating back to the 1960s. Currently there are four Chicano Studies classes offered at Oxnard, three at Moorpark, and four at Ventura.
Oxnard College English Professor, Shelley Savren, coordinator of the Scholars’ Lecture Series, was supportive of the program.
“Given that Oxnard College has such a large Chicano student body I think it’s important to have a course that reflects that population,” she said.
“This understanding will help open up dialogue which then will help us to accept one another.”
Moreno is a board member on the National Association of Chicana and Chicano Studies, or NACCS, the largest association of its kind in the nation. Moreno, who also has a master’s in Chicano Studies, is currently working on his doctorate in History.
