Moorpark College students received some professional insight on how to be successful entrepreneurs at the Business Expo on April 23.
The Business Students Association hosted the event where students heard four presentations from successful entrepreneurs where and got an idea of different paths to take and the steps necessary to get there.
“We try to cater to all of the business students, not just the ones in our club,” said BSA President Daniel Glik. “By having an event like this we’re able to bring in professionals from different fields of business to really help give business students an idea of where they might want to go and what kind of steps they would have to take.”
Students heard from professionals such as David Jackson and Chris Berthalson of Showcase Entertainment Inc., Rich Ferraro of Golden Spoon and Phil Zavala of 4 corner Int’l Consulting Group about how to start and maintain a business as well as the risks involved in doing so.
Freshman Andrew Canchola was able to take away a lot from the expo.
“How to manage a company, starting one and what are the risks of starting one and trying to keep it up–[those are] the risk and rewards they taught us of what a company is,” said Canchola.
After the students finished the first three-hour session in Fountain Hall, they moved on to the Performing Arts Center where they heard the keynote speech by CEO of Europlay Capital Advisors, and one of the founders of Ozisoft, Mark Dyne.
Dyne discussed the difficulties of being an entrepreneur and how much risk is involved. He cautioned the students that failure is inevitable and that one must simply learn from it and continues pushing forward for what they love.
Dyne felt it was important to speak to students and help them know the path, see the reality and realistic side of being in business.
“It’s just part of what we do to help future entrepreneurs, future people that are going to be business leaders in our community,” said Dyne.
Business professor Navreet Sumal believed that students could see many different aspects of the business world and landscape by attending the Business Expo and listening to professionals from various different fields.
“There are so many diverse fields, and, yet, within each field there are so many opportunities to specialize,” said Sumal. “Learn more about something that you’re passionate about, or maybe become passionate about something, and then focus on it and use your skills to better your career.”
