Pounding rain and gloomy weather did not dampen spirits at the Psychology Club’s recent bake sale fundraiser.
Students came out in droves on Wednesday, Feb. 24 to support the Ventura College club’s latest efforts to raise money for upcoming events. Set up on three tables in the corridor of the Learning Resource Center from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Psychology Club attracted passersby with a variety of homemade cupcakes, cookies and muffins.
“We’re doing really well,” said Psychology Club President Tara Darling.
Funds raised in the bake sale will go towards a number of forthcoming events hosted by the organization.
According to Eloy Sosa, a 20-year-old student and the ASVC representative for Psychology Club, a portion of the funds will go towards their annual Clothesline Project to spread awareness on domestic abuse, violence and rape.
Part of the funds raised will also go toward the club’s annual THNK event for alcohol and drug abuse awareness on March 24.
“We participate in as many activities as possible,” said Sosa. “This is our main form of raising funds.”
The Psychology Club raised approximately $533 by selling most of their baked goods at just $1.
“That’s far more than we’ve done before,” said Sosa.
The contribution of baked goods came from club members and students from the classes of their faculty advisor, Lucy Capuano-Brewer.
According to Darling, students in the classes were offered extra credit for donating. However, students found other motivations to donate.
One such student is Cacy Lagomar, a 23-year-old student in Brewer’s personal development class.
“It goes to a good cause,” said Lagomer.
According to Sosa, the Psychology Club has more bake sales planned for the future.
“We are pretty active, one of the most active clubs on campus, I think,” said Sosa.
