Students stopped and dropped on Feb. 14 to recognize the one billion women who have been affected by violence against women.
Professor Cynthia Barnett was in charge of coordinating the event and hoped that the event would hit home for students.
“It’s an individual problem, but it is a social problem as well,” said Barnett. “Bringing people out gives them more of a connection to it.”
This on-campus event was a part of a global tradition that has been going on every year since 1998.
V-Day “One Billion Rising” is used to recognize the one billion women that have been abused throughout the world. People participating in this event fell to the ground at the strike of 12 p.m. They stayed there for one minute to recognize those affected by the violence.
Barnett put this event on as a part of her sociology and gender class.
“I am making an effort to have the students differentiate between feminist scholarship and feminist activism,” said Barnett.
Jade Baer, 21, psychology major, said that women should take precautions to protect themselves.
“I think it’s really smart,” said Baer. “These women need to know about it.”
Some students, like Devin Sullivan, 19, went to the event for a class requirement.
“I participated in it for my class and we all have to do a project about women’s shelter,” said Sullivan.
