It’s that time of the year again when Moorpark College students must act quickly if they’re interested in doing an internship for the spring 2013 semester.
Judi Gould, director of the Career and Transfer center, recommends internships to students.
“I think it’s a good way for students to get some exposure to see if you like [a field of work] early on in community college,” Gould said.
Internships consist of working in a field related to a student’s career goal or major with prior or concurrent coursework in the discipline. Students can receive up to four units per semester and 16 total transferable CSU credits.
Gould said that students who enroll in internships have a higher chance of getting a job in the field of their choice.
“Students who do internships are more likely to get jobs and earn higher wages,” said Gould.
No matter what the career field is, internships are important as they teach students useful skills and knowledge and demonstrate interest to future employers.
Even though employment is not guaranteed after an internship, it gives the employer an opportunity to see if the student is a viable candidate for a job.
Zubi Olin, 29, a recent alumna, landed an internship at local television station, ABC 7, during her first year at Moorpark College.
“Working at ABC 7 as an undergraduate at Moorpark College taught me a great deal about how the news industry has changed and is evolving in today’s world,” said Olin.
With the knowledge and experience Olin gained from her internship, she was able to get a job as a Theatrical Assistant at a talent agency in Burbank.
Students must act fast as the deadline to apply is on Feb. 20. There have already been several orientations for prospective applicants. To learn more about internships and making a final decision visit the Career and Transfer Center.
