Students, advisors, and community members will meet at Moorpark College this Saturday to discover the demands and expectations of the digitally evolving field of journalism.
Journalism Day will consist of work-shops and discussions with varied topics to serve the interests of all participants, ranging from potential students to seasoned professionals. The event costs $15 and is open to all, but is especially designed for journalism students and advisers. The charge covers the cost of lunch and a continental breakfast. The event has been organized by Joanna Miller, journalism professor and student print and online newspaper adviser at Moorpark College.
“This conference gives everyone the opportunity to hear from industry professionals what they want future employees to know,” Miller said. She explained that although the focus of the conference is on digital media, traditional concepts and techniques will be discussed as well.
“There is something there for anyone interested in today’s media and its transformation to meet tomorrow’s consumer demands,” Miller said.
From 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. this Saturday in the Moorpark College Performing Arts Center, Journalism Day will commence as a series of workshops led by professionals from the Ventura County Star, the Los Angeles Times, Brooks Institute of Photography, the Moorpark Acorn, the Palisadian-Post, and the California Newspaper Publishers Association. A California-based attorney will provide insight and facts about media law and the rights of the press.
After lunch at noon, Ventura County Star Publisher Tim Gallagher will give his keynote address, followed by John Moore of the Ventura County Star, who will speak on the Digital Revolution, concluding the event around 2:45 p.m.
The conference is sponsored by the Tri-County Journalism Education Association, Moorpark College, and the California Newspaper Publishers Association.
