Ventura College’s sophomore pitcher Jake Renshaw threw his third complete game of the season, helping the Pirates open up the Western State Conference season with a win against the defending champions. Ventura defeated Oxnard College, winning 2-1.
Renshaw (3-1) gave up no earned runs en route to striking out 14 batters in the game, including one batter in the ninth inning when Oxnard runners were on first and third base. While Renshaw provided the Pirates with the pitching support, Ryan Rodriguez and Junior Solis chipped in on the offensive side of the game.
Rodriguez had two hits in the game including a run scored in the third inning while Solis had an RBI single in the sixth inning to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
Condors pitcher Sergio Acuna (3-2) had a complete game providing three strikeouts and a walk.
On Sunday, however, the Condors were able to avenge the loss they suffered on Thursday, getting a 9-8 victory over the Pirates. The Condor offense was provided by Mike Minjares who had two hits in the game. Cody Nash helped to contribute to the victory, scoring three times. Jared DeCamp also chipped in by driving in two runs.
For the Pirates Junior Solis went 2 for 5 and scored twice, while Colin Timmons went 2 for 3, scoring twice and driving in two runs.
After their loss on Sunday the Pirates are now 7-11, includinga 1-1 record in the WSC. The Condors are now 12-4, 1-1 in the WSC. The next time these two teams will face each other again will be on Saturday March 25 at Oxnard College and on Tuesday March 28 at Ventura College.
The Pirates will next play at home against the Raiders on Thursday.
