Moorpark wins its second game in a row. The victory was against Santa Barbra Community College in a hard fought battle right down to the wire on Sept 25, 2010.
The first quarter opened up with SBCC scoring in the first 7 min on a 7yd touchdown run by Marcus Ruffian in Moorpark’s red zone. Things were at a stand still closing out the first with SBCC scoring the only points.
The second quarter was a shootout with both teams scoring back an forth, running back Derek Morris ran in a touchdown at the 13:40 mark to make it 7-7, Moorpark continued the onslaught soon after that with another rushing touchdown by Morris to make it 14-7, SBCC responded on a 50 yard run by Michael Douglas to make it 14-14.
Star receiver Chris Gant broke up the tie with one of his two touchdown catches on a 9 yard pass from quarterback Zach Shultis making it 21 – 14. After the game Gant talked about his performance
“There’s always room to get better, you just have to capitalize on mistakes and keep the ball going and keep winning, I don’t plan on losing anymore,” said Gant
SBCC were able to end the half with the lead on a 71 yard touchdown pass from quarterback John Uribe to wide receiver Chris Kordakis making it 20-21 with a missed two point conversion. This was made up for by SBCC’s defense with a safety coming off of a blocked punt that was recovered by Moorpark in their own endzone putting SBCC up 22-21 at half.
To start the 2nd half Moorpark made a quarterback change putting in punter/quarterback Dalton Botts. A good decision it seemed when he drove down the field on his first set of downs for 7 plays going 62 yards ending with a 6 yard touchdown pass to running back Derek Morris.
Three fumbles set back SBCC in the third but came as a blessing to Moorpark with one of those fumbles being turned into a 39 yard touchdown pass between quarter back Dalton Botts and receiver Chris Gant.
Nick Bruce safety/outside linebacker gave his insights on the defensive performance that held back SBCC in the 3rd“I got hurt in the first half and wasn’t suppose to come out in the second half, but I said ‘F that I’m going to help my team get a W’, I got together with a couple of key players on defense, we came together as a team and I trusted the man next to me and he trusted me, and we got some big plays,” said Bruce.
This defensive stance continued into the fourth when things came down to the wire with SBCC at the Moorpark 27 and the score 35-29. Moorpark was able to force a turnover on downs allowing them to wind down the clock and get the win with the final 35- 29.
Coach Jim Bittner added about his teams performance “Our defense were stones the week before they just shut em’ down and I think they got feeling good about themselves and thought it was going to be easy and they finally found it in themselves to make the stop in the end,” said Bittner.
