Ventura College’s pitching and clutch hitting led the Pirates to a 3-1 victory over rival Moorpark College.
Heather Sliger, Samantha Hernandez, and Edna Gutierrez provided the offense that the Pirates needed against the Raiders.
Hernandez went 2 for 3 with a single, a double, an RBI, and a run, while Sliger went 1 for 2 with an RBI single in the fourth. Gutierrez was 2 for 3 with a singleand an RBI double.
Even though Ventura came away with the victory, the coaches thought the team could have done a better job.
“We played OK,” said assistant coach Sonia Ford. “We have high expectations for them, our overall intensity helped us win the game today.”
The Pirates scored three runs on seven hits with two errors in the game. Stephanie Kimberling was the only player from the Raiders that was able to manufacture an RBI during the game. The Raiders had a chance in the fifth inning when the bases were loaded and the Pirates leading 2-1. Ventura’s defense and pitching was able to keep Moorpark scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Earlier this season the Pirates split a doubleheader with their cross county rival Raiders. In the first game the Raiders were able to beat the Pirates 5-3 and in the next game the pirates were able to strike back with a 10-0 win over the Raiders.
The Pirates next and final home game of the season is on Friday April 21 with a doubleheader against Santa Barbara City College.
