On the last day to file tax returnsSunday, a Ventura comedian claimed that cheating the IRS is like cheating on your spouse.
“If you don’t want to pay your taxes,” said Livery Theatre improvisation Master of Ceremonies Dave Cintron, “then, you can always wear a disguise.”
The Ventura Area TheatreSports™ (VATS) held a “Tax Day” comedy improv show at the Livery Theatre April 15 Admission was $8.50 to watch and participate as the players acted out scenes to give advice and answerquestions on the pleasant, the painful, and the sad-but-true things about tax season.
The VATS is a non-profit organization formed in 1989, and has been running the LiveryTheatre since 1997 hosting improv shows and instructing workshops for people of all ages. Plus, they open the theatre to localbands working through the promotional company Blackbird Music.
The Tax Day show began with live jazz piano and harmonica music, and a disclaimer from Cintron warning the audience if their cell phones go off they would become part of the scene. The show was an open improv group performance where any of the 8 players on the stage could jump into the scenes similar to the TV show “Whose line is it anyway?”
With the audience’s participation, Cintron read a question and named a special challenge for the players, such as “Song Queue” where if yelled they had to create a song on the spot. Cintron concluded each performance with a moral.
“If your 40-year-old son will not move out you could claim him dependant,” said Cintron. “But it would be better to throw him out.”
VATS host Rolling for Laughs April 21 at 8 p.m. admissions $7.50. Team Match April 22 at 8 p.m. and Radio Thriller at 10 p.m. $8.50 for admissions. Bands Necrogrind, El Barbaro, The Ahnkou, Manic Demise, and Monoterama are playing April 23 at 7 p.m.
