Children gathered with their families for a day of fun and festivities at Moorpark College’s Discovery Day fundraiser, held at the Child Development Center on Saturday, March 25.
Coordinator Linda Cravens and student volunteers worked together in organizing over 30 creative activity booths which featured face painting, boat-building, rainbow stew, shopping carts, and a sticky wall. The event was presented by students, teachers, parents and volunteers in Moorpark College’s Child Development program.
Cravens was happy with the turnout and support from volunteers and the community. “It’s wonderful to watch the families and children having a great time together,” she said.
The Child Development Center’s fundraiser is more than just one day of fun.
Discovery Day is a popular semi-annual event in the community and, on average, draws a crowd of around 800, with many parents bringing their children during the fall and spring semesters, Cravens said.
One of the main attractions was Gene West’s wooden toys. The toys are interactive, and uniquely creative. The children had a wide variety of similarly creative activities to participate in and learn from.
“We have a lot of things kids don’t usually get to experience, like woodworking,” said student volunteer, Jessica Norwine.
Moorpark College Professor Clint Harper entertained everyonewith music from his group, The Sunshine Band.
As student worker Elizabeth Patterson explained, “It’s a great day for parents to see what we have here and what the program has to offer.”
Adrian Hernandez, a parent who appeared satisfied with the program, said, “the teacher to student ratio is good in the program. There is a lot more special attention.”
The college Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society was also present, helping to set up the snack tables and to sell snacks. Baked goods were made by parents and volunteers also in the program. Admission was $5 for children and $3 for adults.
