The Oxnard College’s men’s basketball team could not squeak out a win in their regular season home finale, struggling against L.A. Pierce College in an 81-61 loss Wednesday night at the Condor Center.
The Condors’ dedicated the night to sophomores, who were playing the final home games of their careers. However, the night would be bittersweet.
The Condors (12-14, 5-6 WSC) won the tip-off, before losing the possession on a turnover, foreshadowing the rest of the game’s performance.
They were missing shots, getting into foul trouble and failed to grab defensive rebounds.
The defense was mediocre to say the least, allowing the Brahmas (14-11, 8-3) to score easy baskets inside.
Despite trailing 30-15 in the first half, Condors forward James Ennis provided some spark for the offense. Ennis stole the pass intended for a Pierce player, dribbled it down the court and lobbed it to Scooter Holmes for the alley-op.
In the second half, the Condors put themselves in a tough bind trailing by as much as 33 points.
With less than four minutes left in the game and cutting the deficit in half, sophomore guard Ryan McLucas made a three-pointer in an attempt to create a late surge. Soon after, McLucas lobbed a pass to Ennis for the alley-op, but it proved to be too little too late, as they ended up falling to the Brahmas 81-61.
McLucas led the Condors with 19 points.
McLucas thought the team did what it could to win, but simply came up short.
“We played hard, we gave it all our effort,” he said. “We just started off slow.”
The Condors will finish the season Saturday night at Ventura College. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
