Students that are interested in joining a campus club can meet with club representatives along Raider Walk on Feb. 20-21 at Moorpark College’s Club Rush from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Students will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from 38 different clubs to inquire about future meetings, goals, and their activities for the semester.
Sharon Miller, faculty advisor for the Associated Students, said that students should get involved in clubs to get more connected with the campus.
“It creates student life beyond the classroom for students to get involved and it provides a sense of belonging,” said Miller. “For their own personal growth and their own personal social well-being for being connected to the college and meeting other students.”
Clubs on campus help create a social life among students and build connections with other people to find employment.
Anyone interested in creating a club on campus must follow the steps to obtain recognition from the Associated Students.
The first step is that a club must recruit a minimum of four members that are registered Moorpark College students and a faculty advisor. The faculty advisor will advise the organization on rules and regulations, attend organization meetings and events, supervise the organization’s financial transactions, and give general guidance to the organization.
The next step is to write up a constitution with standing rules on how the organization will operate and submit a Student Organization Information form, a Student Organization Officer Information form, and an Advisor’s Agreement.
The last step in the process is for a Trust account to be created for financial transactions for the club.
Samantha Murphy, Director of Student Organizations for Moorpark College said that new clubs have to be created using the Associated Student guidelines.
“Make sure all of the paperwork is in, everything is legal, and if they are by our standing rules and constitution, everything has to go by the book,” said Murphy.
Out of the 38 different clubs, eight of them have been created for this semester. Some of the new clubs include the Christian Club, Biology Club, French Club, Basketball Club, and many others.
Daryl Westphal, 18, Music Major, who is interested in the FLEX Club and Vocal Arts Club, said that other students will probably be interested in clubs when they find out more information about them.
“They are definitely going to get a good amount of information,” said Westphal. “They are probably going to find something out about a club that they didn’t know before.”
Miller said that she thinks that everyone at Moorpark College should be involved on the campus.
“I think that every student that comes to Moorpark College should join a club,” said Miller.
