In a game that featured ten lead changes and six ties, the Oxnard College women’s basketball team fell to L.A. Pierce College 59-55 Wednesday evening at the Condor Center.
The first half was sloppy for both teams, who combined for 27 turnovers.
However, according to Condors head coach Phil Sherman, turnovers were not the only problem.
“It was ugly at times during the first half but we got it together in the second,” said Sherman. “We handled the ball better in the second half, but we didn’t get back defensively.”
The Condors (14-10, 5-6 WSC) and the Brahmas (13-15, 4-7) played a back-and-forth battle for most of the first half. Trailing early, the Condors cut the lead to two on Amanda Izaguirre’s jumper, but the Brahmas scored a three-pointer to end the half to give the Brahmas a 22-17 advantage at the half.
Despite Pierce College opening the second half with a jumper, giving them a seven-point advantage, Oxnard clawed its way back into the game, eliminating the deficit when Nicole Tauau tied the contest at 24 on a pair of free throws.
With 10:35 remaining in the game, the Condors tied the game for a sixth and final time, 37-37 on an Aja Ellen Tamai free throw. The Brahmas controlled the game for the duration of the half to defeat the Condors on the road.
Tauau led the game in scoring, posting 15 points. Shaniqua Perkins, Arlene Cortez, and Danikha Edwards all recorded eight points, with Edwards leading the team in rebounds, snagging 12 total, including 5 offensive rebounds. Cortez was right behind Edwards with 11 rebounds.
As a team, Oxnard College played a solid game, outrebounding Pierce College 43-36, while also getting 26 points from its bench, but were unable to get the victory.
The Condors travel to Ventura College Saturday night in their regular season finale. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
