As part of the Year of Democracy program, Moorpark College is hosting a faculty lecture by Anthropology Professor John Baker entitled “U.S. and ‘Them.'”
The lecture will focus on America’s role as a democracy in a world where democratic governments are becoming more common.
“We always hear politicians say that this is the greatest country in the world, but what facts do we have to back that up?” said Baker. “Is it because we just feel that way?”
The fall semester of the Year of Democracy at Moorpark College focused on the United States. The spring semester will shift the focus to democracy’s effect on the world as a whole.
Baker feels this lecture is a good transition and will help the students see their country in a different perspective.
“I think it [the lecture] will give the students a more realistic view on our country’s place in the world,” said Baker.
“U.S. and ‘Them'” will take place on Feb. 18 at 12 p.m. in the TV studio at the Communications Building.
