The award-winning production of “The Vagina Monologues” arrives at Moorpark College’s studio theater stage Sept. 29.
A diverse 25 member female cast will perform the provocative and highly candid series of monologues. Directed by Theater Arts Professor Dr. Katherine Lewis, the off-Broadway hit by playwright Eve Ensler is an entertaining event but quite an eye opening one as well.
“The play is exciting to direct because it opens up a profound dialogue between women and creates an invitation to say what we thought we couldn’t,” said Lewis. “There’s really a tremendous sense of elation between the women in the audience.”
Throughout the performance, audiences can expect a variety of content concerning female anatomy that transcends mere physical composition and ultimately leads to the emergence of women’s deepest fantasies and fears. Having garnered an Obie Award, been translated into 24 different languages, and performed on past occasions by Jane Fonda, Oprah Winfrey, and Glenn Close, “The Vagina Monologues” have been catapulted into the 21st century’s pop-culture as one of the revolutionary theatrical pieces concerning female issues and sexuality. Not only will women learn about their own sexuality from the performance, but it is also said by Lewis that men are equally as apt to find infinitely valuable information through attending the production as well.
To encourage men to come as well, Lewis created a “bring a guy” two-for-one ticket deal on the nights of Sept. 30 and Oct. 8. Ensler’s “Vagina Monologues” have not only branched out to theater audiences, but to television audiences as well.
Recently, Ensler has appeared in a television version of “The Vagina Monologues” on HBO. “The Vagina Monologues” has proven itself on some of the most significant stages in the world. Next stop: Moorpark College.
