The Moorpark College football team (1-1) fell to the powerhouse of Long Beach College on Saturday 39-14, but won its season opener in a brand new stadium a week ago at home against Cerritos, starting a 10-game season.
The Long Beach football team seemed to have their way with the Moorpark Raiders by really clicking on both sides of the ball. On the defensive side Long Beach forced a fumble and forced a safety, contributing to Moorpark’s failure to move the ball downfield against the defense.
The Raiders had some success on defense however, recovering a fumble for a touchdown to lead to the Raiders first score. Being down going into the second half Moorpark could not keep up with Long Beach as wide receiver Stanley Franks for Long Beach scored two consecutive touchdowns. One of the leaders on the Moorpark football team Cody Holland went down in the second half with a leg injury.
This loss came off Moorpark winning a thriller one week ago against Cerritos College. In the first half of the game Moorpark had a total of three interceptions however, the Raiders offense struggled with their only first half points coming off a pass from Holland to Toni Washington. Washington made a spectacular catch along the right sideline for the score.
The second half of the game was an offensive outburst for Moorpark. It started with a huge play from Holland to Bawden for a 76 yard gain. The fourth quarter would be a shoot out between Moorpark and Cerritos. After a score by Cerritos early in the fourth, cut the deficit to three Moorpark needed a big play in order to seal the victory. The Raiders got that from Troy Lewis as he returned a kickoff for a touchdown to increase the lead to 10.
” I just got my blocks and made my moves from there,” said Lewis. “Our team did good we need to keep working harder, our defense played good and held it down at the end.”
Down to the last minute Cerritos made a drive and with six seconds left attempted a pass to the end zone to tie it up, but it was broken up by the Raiders strong secondary. Moorpark excitingly came out with the victory winning 30-23. The football team has five key returning players from the offensive side. The offensive line will try their best to keep freshman quarterback Holland healthy.
Rising star Nick Bawden is looking to make some spectacular plays at wide out. On the other side of the ball, they have seven returning key players from defense. Dominic Foli, and Troy Lewis will be showing key leadership to the others since they started every game last year. With good returning starters on defense, Moorpark will look to unite together as a unit. With a young team the Raiders will look to gel together and become a young winning football squad.
