Every day, bikers struggle as they peddle through Ventura College in search of spots for their bicycles. The issue of bike racks comes to many people’s attention after witnessing mangled bikes stacked on each other and hearing what some of the peddlers had to say.
Students not only deal with the issue of quantity, but with convenience as well. Most of the racks at Ventura College are on the outskirts of campus and large enough to fit four to five bikes properly. Limited space is becoming even scarcer as more students begin to ride their bikes to school.
Being a time of change and conservation, a tremendous amount of students are evolving to the eco-friendly ways of a bicyclist. Amongst the bikers here are the locals who like to make the convenient, two-wheel commute. Ventura local and art major, Dan Ortiz is a nearby resident.
“Yeah, I do love that I am so close to campus, but riding my bike has been a pain lately,” said Ortiz. “By the time I get here in the morning the racks are covered with bikes.”
Other irritated bikers like Ortiz are not fond of the situation, resulting in bikes locked up on handrails, walkways and in halls. First year Pirate and eco-friendly student working on her general education Jessica White shared Ortiz’s opinion.
“If only there was room for more than four bikes per rack, then maybe more people would try to conserve the environment and ride their bikes,” said White.
Most bikers have suggested new bike racks that can hold more bikes, along with being more convenient for getting to class. The situation has yet to be resolved by any staff and there is no plan of action for any new bike racks.
