The Oxnard College baseball team turned a game-ending double play with runners on the corners to preserve a 6-5 victory over the Moorpark College Raiders Thursday afternoon.
Condors pitcher Chris Defratus allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits while striking out three in seven innings of work to get the victory. After Raiders scored twice in the top of the ninth inning, reliever Corey McElliott got the final three outs in dramatic fashion for the save.
With the Condors (23-9, 13-3 WSC) clinging to a 6-5 lead and the Raiders (9-21-1, 2-14) threatening with runners at first and third, McElliot got Nick Correlli to fly out to shallow center field and Josh Gray to ground into a double play to seal the victory for the Condors.
Luis Andrade led the Condors offense, going two for four with two runs batted in. The Condors, who had leads of 2-0 and 4-2, had nine hits on the game.
Alexander Birgel led the Raiders with three hits, including a double. Tyler Wirth drove in three runs with a double and triple, and Matt Toczynski hit two doubles.
According to Condors head coach John Larson, the Condors were able to take the win despite the Raiders’ hitting ability.
“Moorpark has good hitters,” said Larson. “Luckily, we didn’t have any errors and we pitched well today. Both Chris Defratus and Corey [McElliot] worked well to maintain our lead.”
