The Oxnard College baseball team continues to find ways to score, hanging on to a 9-6 victory over the Glendale Community College Vaqueros at Oxnard Tuesday afternoon.
Although the Condors were able to execute offensively, Condors head coach, Jon Larson believed the win was a result of the bullpen pitching.
“It was another solid pitching performance,” Larson said.
“The development of our pitchers has been outstanding so far this season.
We’ve had quality pitching in our twelve games this season and our bullpen has been solid.”
The Condors (8-4) were led by Luis Andrade who finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, two runs scored and a homerun. Max Mackey finished 2-for-5 with a solo home run, as the Condors had five players with multiple hits.
According to Larson, sophomore Catcher Justin Bricker paved the way with a team-best three RBIs.
“We had good at-bats in this game and the single from Justin Bricker with the bases loaded coupled with the error in left [field] gave us the cushion we needed to win the game,” said Larson.
For the Vaqueros (8-4), Jason Ochart was the bright spot with a pair of home runs to finish with a game-high four RBIs.
Condor Pitcher Cory McEliott recorded his first win of the season in a seven-inning effort. McEliott surrendered six runs, five earned, on five hits.
Freshman Chris Defratus closed out the final two innings for Oxnard College in fine form. Defratus allowed two hits to record his first collegiate save.
Joshua Natham received the loss for Glendale Community College, struggling in five innings, giving up 11 hits and nine runs, eight earned, to the Condors.
After surrendering a two-run homerun from Ochart in the top of the first, the Condors countered the offensive attack in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs. After a Mackey one-out double to right-center field, Andrade registered his first homer of the year with a blast over the scoreboard in left.
Tied at two, the Condors took the lead for good in the third with a solo shot from Mackey. In the fourth, Bricker and Jake Mahant recorded an RBI each to increase the lead to the 5-2, before holding on 9-6.
