The Moorpark College Women’s soccer team ended a six game winning streak, with their first lost to undefeated Pierce College last Tuesday.
Overall the Lady Raiders have had a strong start to their season with a 6-1-1 record. They have dominated their competition by out scoring them 26- 5.
Head coach Eric Privat has trained his teams so every player can contribute and be a part of the team’s overall success. All of the Lady Raiders wins have truly been a team effort, with all of forwards scoring.
“Fantastic leadership from the sophomores, maturity from the freshmen, and the passion the girls have for each other and the game,” said Privat about why his team has been successful so far.
The Lady Raiders, who are ranked number 19th in the state, lost 4-1 to the number two ranked Lady Brahamas. Both teams were undefeated going into the Moorpark home game. The Raiders are an older team who welcomed back nine sophomores, and hope they can win league this year.
Last year, Moorpark had a strong season where they finished 13-4-4 overall and went to the second round of the playoffs, where they lost to the 2003 State Champions Long Beach College.
Moorpark knew that they would have their hands full with a physical Pierce team. The Lady Raiders played Pierce close early in the game, and had some good scoring opportunity that they were not able to cash in.
Brittney Lloyd, the goalie made two saves, with a broken finger. But Pierce opened up the game with a penalty kick in the 39th minute. Then at the end of the first half Pierce was able to knock in a goal, to lead the game 2-0 at the half.
In the second half, the Lady Raiders tried to close the gap with a goal from Mary Vercher. But Pierce extended their lead with two goals. This loss should not affect Moorpark’s chances this season for a rebirth in the playoffs. They remain to have a stronghold in their conference.
