When J.K. Rowling outed Albus Dumbledore, everyone reacted the same way they would when a beloved friend comes out of the closet. A little weirded out at first, but eventually accept the new identity and move on. But the outing of Dumbledore raised the question: who else in the world of fictional characters is gay?Albus Dumbledore serves as the voice of wisdom in the Harry Potter series and acts as the elusive mentor to the hero, Harry Potter. Does that mean every voice of wisdom and elusive mentor in literature or folklore is gay too? Could Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars be gay? Or even Yoda?There are also the ambiguously gay duos such as Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street. But everybody knows they’re gay. Everybody but them. “Roommates” don’t take baths together with a rubber ducky. Peppermint Patty and Marcie from Peanuts are probably gay too. Give those two a couple years and Marcie calling Patty “sir” will have whole different meaning.About half the Disney characters are probably gay too. The most prominent example being Rabbit from Winnie the Pooh. That bunny is way too uptight about his garden.Grumpy from the seven dwarves could be gay too. Or maybe all the other dwarves are gay and Grumpy is the only straight one and he knows that Snow White is way out of his league. That’s probably why he’s so grumpy.Bugs Bunny also gives off a bit of a homosexual vibe. Granted pissing off Elmer Fudd seems like a whole lot of fun but that wascally wabbit seems a little too eager to cross dress and make out with the guy who wants to kill him.Sooner or later, these characters might end up coming out themselves. But even if their new identity might weird us out a little bit, let’s try and remember the impact these characters have on the world. Ironically, these fictional characters have had more of an impact on the world than most real people. Whether it be training us in the ways of the Jedi or teaching us the rubber ducky song. Even if they are gay, their existence in our imagination has affected how we act in the real world. At least that’s what Kyle said on South Park about a week ago.
