Coming off a close win against L.A. Valley College, the Ventura Pirates football team looked to start a season high two game-winning streak.
Ventura took on Compton College, who is a Western State Conference opponent.
The pirates came out strong scoring two touchdowns and pulling out to a 14-6 lead over Compton. The Compton Tartars did not lie down and quit however, they came back strong.
The Tartars quickly scored 22 unanswered points jumping out to a 28-14 lead.
Ventura looked sluggish and they had a big deficit to comeback from.
After making the two catches in the first half to put the 14 points up on the board, Charles Dillon went down with an injury.
The injury was a big loss for Ventura. Dillon is one of the top receivers in the Western State Conference and has made many big plays for them in the past.
Most of the game was plagued by over aggressiveness, with both teams often getting into arguments with each other.
Ventura feeded off this and gained much needed momentum coming into the second half.
Ventura knew coming out of the second half they had to slow down the run, after a big first half from Compton running back Bryan Baylor. Baylor ended the game with a total of 147 yards and two touchdowns.
Many of those yards came in the first half as the Pirates shut down the rushing attack of Compton for the first 30 min of the second half.
That stellar defense led to Ventura’s comeback which was one for the ages.
Coming all the way back and leading 31-28, Ventura’s Aaron Brown put the team on his shoulders and had them leading with 35 seconds to go.
It looked like the game was in the Pirate’s hands, but Compton pulled off the impossible. On the Ventura 36-yard line Compton had one last play.
They threw a hail mary pass to wide receiver Devin Stearns who caught the pass in the end zone and broke the heart of the Ventura football team. The final score was 34-31.
It was a tough loss for the Pirates. The game will cause Ventura to fall even farther down in the Western State Conference standings.
Ventura will try to avenge their tough loss next Saturday as they face Ventura County rival, Moorpark College. If Ventura has any hope in making the playoffs they must knock off the Raiders.
It will not be an easy task however Moorpark has a winning record at home and is coming off a win against West L.A. College.
The game will be played at Moorpark College at 7 p.m.
