The Moorpark College football team and the Ventura College Pirates clashed in a heated rivalry game for the Citrus Cup and both teams came with all their weapons in preparation for a big battle at Griffin Stadium.
The Raiders came out sluggish in the first quarter. While Ventura could not getting anything started. In the second quarter the Raiders were firing all their cannons at the Ventura Pirates and scored 24 unanswered points.
As Moorpark jumped on the scoreboard big in the second quarter, the Pirates had no retaliation to Moorpark’s firing second quarter attack. Moorpark came out like a team on a mission.
Cody Holland started his second game of the year, after only playing in the season opener due to injury. Holland played as if he hasn’t missed a game all year. Also back for the rivalry game is wide receiver Tony Washington.
Holland looked Washington’s way most of the game by connecting with him 4 times for 168 yards. Washington put Moorpark in scoring position many times throughout the game Both Holland and Washington seemed as both of them have been playing together for years.
Not only did that help the Raiders, but special teams return man Troy Lewis had many key punt and kickoff returns to set up the Raiders in good field position.
Not only did the Raiders offense come out firing, but the defense stood tall and shut down the Pirates rushing game. The Pirates passing game only tallied for a total of 97 yards.
The total Pirates offense combined was limited to 123 yards of offense. Moorpark also shut down one of the top receivers in the Western State Conference in Charles Dillon. Dillon ended the game with 9 catches, but for only 46 yards The Raiders came out victorious and cruised to a smooth sailing in a 37-3 route of Ventura and won the Citrus Cup for the second straight season.
Not only did the Raiders come out with bragging rights, but by winning the game the Raiders tied the all time season series at 19-19.
Moorpark also moved ahead of Ventura in the WSC North Division.
After the great victory the Raiders took a hit, while during the game losing Cliff Cardwell and Felipe Macias both to injuries. Cardwell went down with a knee injury, while Macias had an ankle injury.
Moorpark has three games left in this 2005 season, and all of them are key essentials to making a charge up the north division.
The Ventura Pirates have three games left with two of them being home games. The Pirates are going to have to battle tough to come away with an even record. The Raiders will host Bakersfield College .
