An aging sports fan is transformed into a super-slugger baseball star to help his favorite team win the pennant in the devilishly good play “Damn Yankees” at Moorpark College on the main stage in the Performing Arts Center.
The play will include musical numbers such as “Shoeless Joe,” during which male dancers dressed as baseball players bring a coreographic element to the poduction.
All the dances are choreographed by Dennon and Sayhber Rawles who also choreographed the popular movie “Bugsy,” staring Warren Beatty.
“This is a fun show with great dances,” said Dennon Rawles.
Based on the novel “The Year the Yankees Won the Pennant” written by Douglass Wallop, the story is about a man’s obsession with baseball. He sells his soul to the devil in order to go back and beat the Yankees for the pennant. He has until the final game night to get the winning game or else his soul is gone forever.
The play stars Elizabeth Martin and Matt Rawles and has about 30 students in the production. The production has been in the works since the beginning of the fall semester and is directed and produced by Marilyn Anderson.
“It has all the elements of the performing arts discipline,” said Dennon Rawles. “Singing, acting, dancing and music.”
