Oxnard College men’s soccer team is on a roll winning two games in a row, but the second win came at the expense of a strong Moorpark team.
It was a hard fought game that was 0-0 until the eightieth minute, when the Condor’s scored after a direct kick from Jose Luna that ended up being an assist for Martin Mendez.
Coach Ross Gearney of Oxnard felt that it was a tough game, and a game that featured two teams with contrasting styles. He feels his team likes to play the ball on the ground while Moorpark tries to go with an air attack.
” The guys did well, but we knew if we went down a goal it would be tough to come back,” said Gearney after the game.
From the kickoff both team played hard conceding nothing, stopping every scoring opportunity the other team had.
Goalies from both teams kept their teams in the game. Stuart Kozlenko has six saves for his Moorpark team, while Kenny Negron made one of many great saves off a direct kick from the Raiders Justin Thomas. The game was 0-0 at half.
The second half featured the same aggressive play from the first half. Both teams had several great opportunities but were not able to cash in.
Late in the game the score was still tied, but in the eightieth minute the Raiders were called for a foul, which gave the Condors a direct kick in the goal box.
The kick was taken by Jose Luna, which led to an assist for Martin Mendez who scored the goal. Moorpark barely missed an opportunity to tie the game in stoppage time but the ball went wide by inches.
Moorpark coach Sean Roche felt his team played well but that Oxnard was a little luckier than they were.
“In any contest whoever makes the least amount of mistakes wins, and we made one big mistake,” said Roche.
This game moved Oxnard up to seventh place in the Western State Conference and Moorpark fell to fourth in the WSC.
Both teams have some important games coming up which will be vital to the Western State Conference playoff picture. Moorpark needs to get some wins in order to stay in state contention.
