A $16 health fee goes a long way for all students registered at Moorpark College.
Upon registering for classes all students pay a health fee, giving them complete access to the Student Health Center. The Center provides a wide range of services.
“It’s so convenient,” said Caitlin Scott 19, a history major. “It’s like going to the doctor for free.”
Located in the administration building in room 111, the Student Health Center is made up of registered nurses and doctors that can assess, examine, and treat short term or acute illness. Access to low cost medications is available for all registered students. Services include immunizations for diseases such as Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Tetanus, MMR, and Flu vaccine.
Single doses for over the counter medication and band-aides are also available. There are special services for men and for women including HIV and other STD tests. Students can also receive hearing and vision tests. Students who want to quite smoking can receive nicotine patches. First aid is administered to everyone including campus visitors in the Student Health Center.
Personal counseling is available to all students as well. Students are entitled to six therapy sessions per year. These sessions can help discuss topics such as abuse, drugs, alcohol, sexuality, eating disorders or low self-esteem. Group counseling based on student interest is another option.
Optional health, vision, and dental insurance plans are offered as well. More information on sickness insurance plans is located in the Student Health Center.
There is a physician in the Health Center every Thursday. Appointments are required. Walk-ins will be seen as schedules permit. The Health Center is open Mondays and Wednesdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on Fridays form 9a.m. to 2 p.m.
“It’s great,” said Scott. “You can get Advil and condoms for free.”
