Games, performances, food, prizes, student clubs, and more were at the Oxnard College’s Sports Day created by the Associated Students Government to help form a connection between students and staff at the college.
“The purpose of this event is to improve communication and to have interaction between the faculty, the students, and the staff,” said Carlos Perez, Vice President of the Associated Student Government at Oxnard College. “After playing with these people, the students develop a feeling of trust with the staff and faculty that makes it easier for the students to approach the staff and ask them questions.”
A presentation of each club was shown to the students so that they could become more familiar with each club and its mission. There were also organization and program presentations where students were informed thoroughly about each item.
Sports Day was held at Oxnard College from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov 21. Each club, organization or program had its own team consisting of about six to ten students or staff members of Oxnard College. Volleyball was the featured sport because of its easy scoring and no need for special equipment. Each game lasted about 10 minutes long and was played in the gym.
A few teams present were A.S.G., Tutorial Center, E.O.P.S., Financial Aid, Publications, Dental Hygiene Program, A.P.S.U., and Math Club. The first place winner won $250, second place won $150, and third place won $100. The money was given to the team members and can be used however they like.
Also at Sports Day was a full barbeque brought by the college with the help of C.R.M. The performances at the event were provided by Ballet Folklorico Presentation, Latin Dance Club, Musicians Presentation, and N.E.M.A. Presentation.
Oxnard College’s Dental Hygiene Program was recognized for being number one in the nation during the event. Another recognition went to Elizabeth Hernandez from the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science for a poster she created to document her research activities in an undergraduate internship.
