Various dance styles ranging from ballet to hip-hop will be featured at Moorpark College’s annual spring dance concert, Motion Flux, running on April 25, 26, and 27 at 8 p.m. and April 28 at 2 p.m.
The concert, which is a collaboration of the Dance and Music program, consists of multiple student-choreographed pieces and one full, 40-minute piece, which will celebrate the life of the late Igor Stravinsky.
Stravinsky is the author of “Rite of Spring” as part of the 100 year anniversary of his revolutionary dance and music work.
There will also be two pianists with a full score, which is something director, professor, and choreographer Robert Salas is very enthusiastic about.
Salas, who said it is going to be an exciting show, will present the concert this semester alongside Professor James Song and Professor Nancy Paradis.
“We are really enthusiastic about the presentation of original work because we have a really strong and talented group of student choreographers this semester,” said Salas.
Motion Flux is a dance ensemble put on by the dance M55 course; dance rehearsal and performance, for the spring semester only. There will be an array of dance styles including ballet, modern jazz, tap, and hip-hop.
Salas said that the students are committed to working hard during long rehearsal hours, starting with 30-minute warm up to ensure the best performance possible. As part of these rehearsals, students are required to piece together the show with costume designs, hair and makeup styles, and staging cues.
The whole concert will last a little under two hours, complete with one full group piece, followed by five student-choreographed pieces. The main group piece will be telling a story of the late Igor Stravinsky’s diary, exploring the aspects of his life, original works, and his mental illness.
Emily Aptaker, 19, a psychology major, said she couldn’t wait to perform a dance from a popular Disney song featured in the motion picture “Finding Nemo.”
“I’m super happy to perform and see how things come together this semester,” said Aptaker.
