The Moorpark College campus police recently conducted a sting operation with sister school Oxnard College to apprehend a student suspected of stealing a laptop.
Moorpark College Police Lt. Steve Kegely said witnesses described the suspect as a male in his 20’s wearing a white shirt and Nike tennis shoes. He had approached the victim while the victim was asleep in the library.
During that time the suspect managed to remove the victim’s laptop from the coffee table. Forty-five minutes later, the victim awoke to find the laptop missing. The victim then reported it being stolen to campus police.
The Campus Police took a description of the suspect and retrieved security footage from the library.
The security footage revealed a man matching the description. Kegley said the man was acting suspicious, entering the library with out anything on his person and later leaving with what appeared to be a black bag.
Hours later, campus police discovered the laptop for sale online.
The Moorpark campus police contacted the Oxnard campus police and asked if they could have one of their officers make a phone call to the suspect. The officer went undercover, disguising himself as a student, and set up a time and place to meet.
Within the same day of the phone call, the undercover officer was able to meet with the suspect to view the laptop. The officer matched the computer’s serial number with the one of the victim’s.
Lt. Greg Beckley of the Oxnard College campus police department said it is important for the three campuses to work together.
“We are all apart of the same department, we work together on a as-need basis,” said Beckley.
The suspect was then arrested and booked with grand theft.
