The Moorpark College Bookstore has downsized for three years running in an effort to adjust to falling revenues, but the bookstore will remain open and operating on campus for now, College Vice President Iris Ingram said.
Ingram said that although she is not certain about the long-term viability of the bookstore, there are no plans in the “immediate future” to close the on-campus store. Instead, she said, the bookstore has acted over the last three years to reduce operating costs to keep the store financially self-supporting, which it has to be.
“We have to change, adapt, and innovate to keep pace with changing needs and demands, or face obsolescence,” Ingram said.
The comments came in response to questions following the closure of the campus cafeteria for fall 2012. With increasing numbers of students seeking online alternatives to the on-campus store, a physical bookstore on campus may no longer be required.
“Students have many more options, such as Amazon.com, and other less expensive alternatives,” Ingram said. “The entire academic bookstore industry nationwide is undergoing a sea-change.”
